If panic attacks are all too frequent, they
could result in a chronic anxiety disorder
called panic disorder. Anxiety attacks were
once regarded as a condition of the nerves or stress, but are now regarded as a medical
condition. Panic attacks may cause you to withdraw from normal routines like driving
over a bridge; this condition is called agoraphobia.

However, panic attack is treatable and the sooner you get help, the better. The symptoms of panic attack can be reduced or eliminated with treatment thereby regaining control of your life.

As stated earlier, panic attacks occur suddenly without any warning. It can occur while you are relaxed or asleep. Many people experience many episodes of anxiety attacks although it can be a one or two time experience. Repeated anxiety attacks are usually triggered by a specific situation in which you feel endangered or threatened and presents no obvious escape route or it presents no way of you getting help.

Panic attacks often occur on the spur of the moment, when you are away from home, but they can also happen anywhere and at anytime. It could occur while you are driving, shopping in the mall, or even relaxing at home. The symptoms and signs of a panic attack develop quickly and reach its peak usually in 10 minutes. Most anxiety attacks rarely last an hour; the average duration is usually half an hour.

A full-blown panic attack includes most of these signs: difficulty breathing, racing heart, trembling or shaking, sweating, dizziness, lightheadedness or nausea, chest pain or discomfort, a choking feeling, hot or cold flashes, fear of dying, losing control, or going crazy, an urge to escape, numbness or tingling sensations, feeling "unreal" or "detached" from yourself or surroundings.

The exact causes of panic attacks are unclear, but it has been found that the tendency to have anxiety attacks run in families. Genetics, stress and changes in how parts of your brain function play a role in panic attacks. The body's natural fight-or-flight response to danger is involved in panic attacks. This response is responsible for supplying the body with hormones, particularly adrenaline which helps it in defending against harm. It is interesting to note that while the symptoms of an anxiety attack may give the feeling that the body is failing, it is actually protecting itself from harm.
